He's decided, he says, ``It would be too grim a movie. The world is a tougher place.'' He notes that in the 1970 version of the comedy, in which Jack Lemmon Noun 1. Jack Lemmon - United States film actor (1925-2001)

Producer Scott Rudin thinks there's a chance, and he has someone else attempting to put together a humorous '90s ``Out-of-Towners'' script for Paramount. We'll see.

Meanwhile, Simon is finally getting a remake of his ``The Odd Couple'' ready for Paramount and tells us he expects Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau to start reprising their roles from the '68 film in early June. The feature has been in the works for years, but, he says, things have only come together in recent weeks.

The esteemed playwright is also preparing his latest play for the stage. ``Proposals'' will start rehearsals June 3 at L.A.'s Ahmanson Theatre The Ahmanson Theatre is one of the four main venues that comprise the Los Angeles Music Center.

Just a few years ago, Neil said he wouldn't be playing Broadway because of the costs of mounting a production there. However, he says of the nine-character ``Proposals'' (which will tell the story ``of love and people unloved''), ``this one feels like it belongs on Broadway.''

The JFK watch

You keep reading the screaming tabloid headline about trouble in paradise for John F. Kennedy "John Kennedy" and "JFK" redirect here. For other uses, see John Kennedy (disambiguation) and JFK (disambiguation).

Jr. and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. Now read this. The newlyweds flew from JFK to Heathrow the other day, and a fellow passenger in the business section of the plane reports they were smooching ``like you wouldn't believe.''

Our source, who sat a few rows behind the Kennedys, phoned from London to relay the information, because ``so many bum things have been written about John and Carolyn.'' She added that she was very impressed when John refused the airline's offer of private transportation to take him and Carolyn from the airfield to the terminal, insisting that they'd take the bus that was provided for the others on the plane.

She last spotted them waiting in a long line for a taxi to take them into the city. Why didn't they have a car and driver waiting for them at Heathrow? For that matter, why didn't they fly first class? It's not a surprise to those who know them. After all, this is a fellow who gets around New York by subway.

Davidson appreciates that Price Waterhouse told him the door was open for him to return when he exited 10 years ago, but ``it's my mission in life not to ever have to do that. To me, it was like prison.''

Still, accounting has been very good to Jim. He financed his early career doing tax returns for models and actors (some pretty big names, too), and found that ``most of them have no idea what they're doing when it comes to finances. I had people come to me and say, `Look, I've got $500 to pay taxes. Work backward.' ''

Even today, colleagues who know of Davidson's expertise pump him for information. And since the USA Network has an e-mail address See Internet address.
