`ONION FIELD' KILLER DENIED PAROLE AGAIN.

 was denied parole from state prison Thursday by the state Board of Prison Terms panel at Deuel Vocation Institution, a board spokeswoman said.

Powell, 61, will be eligible for his next parole hearing in 1998, said board spokeswoman Liz Tanaka.

Powell and Jimmy Smith, 65, were convicted of the March 1963 murder of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  police Officer Ian Campbell Ian Campbell is a name shared by several people:

 in an onion field near Bakersfield. The killing was the subject of the Joseph Wambaugh Joseph Aloysius Wambaugh, Jr. (born January 22, 1937, in East Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is an American writer known for his fictional and non-fictional accounts of police work in the United States.

The son of a police officer, Wambaugh joined the U.S.
 novel ``The Onion Field,'' which later was made into a movie.

Powell and Smith kidnapped Campbell and his partner, Karl Hettinger, during a traffic stop in Hollywood and then drove them to the isolated field. Hettinger escaped after Campbell was shot and later testified against Powell and Smith.

Smith was paroled from state prison in 1982. Since then, he has been arrested several times for minor offenses. He was returned to state prison earlier this year.
