Smits certainly shines in the stunning, critically acclaimed two-part ``Lost Israel'' episode of ``NYPD Blue,'' which begins its repeat airing tonight. The searing sear 1

``The Jon-Benet (Ramsey murder) case certainly set us to thinking in certain terms, though we didn't do that story by any means,'' says Bochco. ``David Milch is such a gifted, gifted writer that all this stuff just poured out of him. ... We're all parents; we all feel for children,'' he adds.

Tick, tick, tick

Dan Rather, honored by the Museum of Television & Radio in Beverly Hills the other evening, noted during a chat with this column that plans for CBS (Cell Broadcast Service) See cell broadcast.  to come up with a second ``60 Minutes'' won't come to fruition for a while. On the one hand, there's the ``60 Minutes'' team, including Mike Wallace, Morley Safer and Ed Bradley, who don't want a second show. They also don't like the fact that producer Don Hewitt, 75, might have to divide his time between the two shows. On the other hand, CBS top brass very much want to clone the king of the magazine shows, and as Dan notes, ``They usually get what they want.''

did not find a place on its fall schedule for George Schlatter's ``Prime Time Comedy,'' the show could still find a place on the airwaves. Schlatter informs this column that he's having talks with other networks about the series, which would feature sketch comedy performers. He stresses that ``Prime Time Comedy'' is not the new ``Laugh-In'' he's been trying to bring to the air for quite a while. He notes that the latter has been tough to find a home for because ``shows dealing with current events have no shelf life.'' However, even if a buyer is found, Schlatter doesn't want to do a new ``Laugh-In,'' he says, ``unless I really have the freedom to do it right, and that's difficult today because of the various pressure groups. You can't talk against guns, you can't use accents - oh, for the good old days of `Life With Luigi' and `Molly Goldberg.' ''

Think they've been controversial before? Ellen DeGeneres and Anne Heche were doing something really controversial in the Viper Room on the Sunset Strip the other night - openly, defiantly smoking cigarette after cigarette. And, yep, it was bothering people, even in a rock nightclub, here in health-enlightened L.A. Also there for the show by the band Live were members of Counting Crows and Rage Against the Machine.
