`Major boost for child care'.


Huddersfield mp Barry Sheerman Barry John Sheerman (born 17 August 1940, Middlesex) is a politician in the United Kingdom. He is Labour and Co-operative Member of Parliament (MP) for Huddersfield.

He was educated at the London School of Economics (BSc Economics 1965) and at London University (MSc 1967).

The MP, who is also chairman of the Education and Skills Select Committee, said the plans would provide a major boost for child care.

He said: "They will extend free, high-quality childcare to 15 hours a week for all three- and four-year-olds by 2010, towards our goal of 20 free hours a week.

"Good quality childcare and nursery education improves children's performance when they reach school and boosts their chances throughout life.

"Parents in my constituency want to be able to balance their work and family life and I want to ensure that they have real choice to do so."

Mr Sheerman also welcomed help for the elderly.

"About 7,500 pensioner PENSIONER. One who is supported by an allowance at the will of another. It is more usually applied to him who receives an annuity or pension from the government.  households in Huddersfield will get the pounds 50 extra payment next year," he said.

The measures outlined by the Chancellor were likely to bring benefits to Yorkshire and Humber, said Yorkshire Forward chairman Terry Hodgkinson. But he warned it was important to study the detail of the moves.
