`MY NAME IS EARL' REVELS IN JOY, KARMA.Byline: - David Kronke Joy (Jaime Pressly), the vindictive, scatterbrained scat·ter·brain n. A person regarded as flighty, thoughtless, or disorganized. scat ter·brained ex-wife of long-suffering Earl Hickey (Jason Lee), exploits poor Earl at every turn. Now she seems to be trying to wrest his own sitcom away from him. As the Emmy-winning (for writing and directing) ``My Name Is Earl'' begins its second season, Joy gets in trouble with the law through a series of convoluted idiocies that could only happen to someone on this show. Even Earl's misbegotten mis·be·got·ten adj. 1. a. Of, relating to, or being a child or children born to unmarried parents. b. Not lawfully obtained: misbegotten wealth. 2. efforts at pursuing good karma (``What kind of man doesn't help his ex-wife make bail?'' he asks at the beginning of next week's episode) can't help her, and soon she's facing life in prison. On-target tartness The focus on Joy comes no doubt due to Pressly's Emmy-nominated scene-stealing of last season: Pressly's Joy fairly dominates the other characters; her tart, gum- smacking insults laying waste to the gentler, doofus-y humor the others truck in. When, in episode three of this season, her deaf public defender insults Joy, she responds with a stinging rebuke: ``Those are tough words coming from someone who doesn't even know how to say them.'' There's still some effort to imbue im·bue tr.v. im·bued, im·bu·ing, im·bues 1. To inspire or influence thoroughly; pervade: work imbued with the revolutionary spirit. See Synonyms at charge. 2. Earl and his cronies with a measure of grace, but the writers have also opted to give the show a more surreal, through-the-looking-glass feeling. Burt Reynolds plays a barbecue/dry-cleaning/ go-go-dancing-club mogul in episode two, and in episode three, Earl and brother Randy (Ethan Suplee) befriend be·friend tr.v. be·friend·ed, be·friend·ing, be·friends To behave as a friend to. befriend Verb to become a friend to Verb 1. a neighborhood of carnival freaks. The show could still make better use of Crabman (Eddie Steeples) and Catalina (Nadine Velazquez), but it's nice to see the writers challenging themselves, creating a crazy-quilt world where a blinkered blink·ered adj. Subjective and limited, as in viewpoint or perception: "The characters have a blinkered view and, misinterpreting what they see, sometimes take totally inexpedient action" pursuit of good karma is the sanest response available.
