`MISSION' ACCOMPLISHED AT BOX OFFICE.

``Mission: Impossible'' was projected to earn from $52.5 million to $54.5 million over the four-day holiday weekend, easily ousting oust

 ``Twister'' from the No. 1 spot at the box office, industry sources said Sunday Sunday: see Sabbath; week. .

``Twister'' still made a strong showing with an estimated $36 million take in its third weekend of release.

``Mission: Impossible'' set new marks for a May debut and best Memorial Day weekend. The old May debut mark was set by ``Twister'' with $41 million, and 1994's ``The Flintstones'' was the old holiday record holder with $37.2 million.

Based on the popular television series of the late 1960s and early 1970s, ``Mission: Impossible'' starred and was co-produced by Tom Cruise.

Another new film, the Leslie Nielsen farce ``Spy Hard,'' was in third place with a $10.4 million take.

The figures are preliminary estimates of ticket sales Friday through Monday. Final figures are due out Tuesday.
