`MEXICAN' COMEDY STARS MAKE MOST OF INDEPENDENT EXPERIENCE.

For his second feature-directing outing, young filmmaker Gore Verbinski (``Mouse Hunt'') wanted to make a low-budget, independent ``black romantic adventure comedy'' inspired by old Sam Peckinpah and Sergio Leone Westerns.

Then Julia Roberts got a look at J.H. Wyman's script for ``The Mexican.'' She wanted in. Hearing that, so did Brad Pitt, then super-hot ``Sopranos'' star James Gandolfini James R. Gandolfini (born September 18, 1961) is a three-time Emmy award winning American actor known for multifaceted portrayals of conscientious yet often inherently sinister characters. .

Roberts obviously dug the experience, too; she signed up for Verbinski's next feature, a psychological thriller Psychological thriller is a specific sub-genre of the wide-ranging thriller genre. However, this genre often incorporates elements from the mystery genre in addition to the typical traits of the thriller genre.  that's been quickly slotted into her pre-strike spring window.

``Julia's a small country, for crying out loud,'' Verbinski acknowledges. ``She says, `I'd like to do that,' and suddenly the tanks are in position and troop movements are happening.''
