`LITTLE MISTAKES' ADD UP AT CSUN WASH. ST. 6, CSUN 3.

Byline: Chris Branam Staff Writer

They always talk of the future of the Cal State Northridge baseball program, and how there are better days ahead.

But look into the eyes of outfielder Jason Watkins, a senior who doesn't have the luxury of time.

``We've got to stay positive and not give in. We can't give up,'' Watkins said after Washington State beat the host Matadors 6-3 Sunday afternoon to complete a weekend sweep. ``Little mistakes are killing us. It's a team sport, and we're all making mistakes.''

CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  (9-16) was swept at home in a three-game series by the same team since 1980, when Cal Poly Cal Poly may refer to:

``The only way these kids are going to get better is if you play them every day,'' CSUN coach Mike Batesole said. ``These kids are going to figure it out. We're a second-year expansion team. This is why you call them growing pains grow·ing pains

by Matadors starter Mike Frick (2-3) and a passed ball by catcher Brandon Thompson.

Frick retired seven in a row entering the eighth. Only four of the six runs he was charged with were earned. He struck out four and walked one.

``I blew it with that balk,'' Frick said. ``I felt like I was in a groove. I didn't get that first batter, and that killed me. It makes you want to pull your hair out.''

Northridge managed only eight hits behind Frick, though, including Watkins' homer to lead off the second.

WSU starter Reggie Rivard Reggie Rivard (born 1978 in Edmonton, Alberta) is a professional pitcher for his hometown team the Edmonton Cracker-Cats. He did play for the Texas Rangers farm team before being released and ending up in the Northern League. His full name is Rejean Louis Rivard. , a sophomore right-hander with a 9.00 ERA entering the game, struck out six and allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings.

The Matadors didn't score after the third and stranded a runner at second base with less than two outs twice.

``(Frick) pitched a great game,'' Batesole said. ``We've got to find a way to get him some runs.''
