`LIKE A FIRST KISS' SANTANA BIG WINNER AT LATIN GRAMMYS.

Byline: Fred Shuster Music Writer

There's still something ``Supernatural'' about Carlos Santana Carlos Augusto Alves Santana (born July 20 1947), is a Grammy Award-winning Mexican-born American Latin rock musician and guitarist.

He became famous in the late 1960s and early 1970s with his band, the Santana Blues Band, going mostly under the title "Santana", which

Santana said the inaugural event, designed to honor musical excellence by artists performing in Spanish or Portuguese, ``felt like a first kiss.''

Colombian model, actor and singer Shakira, who had the second-best showing at the event with two wins, struck the only vaguely political note of the evening after accepting her trophy for best female pop vocal performance. She dedicated the award to ``Colombia, which is going through some difficult times, but never forgot how to smile.''

She also won for best female rock vocal performance.

Forty trophies were given out, including 32 before the ceremony was televised, and the categories covered many genres and sub-genres of Latin music.

Still, the inclusive event was not without controversy. Some observers felt the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences overlooked Mexican regional music and favored Sony artists and producers.

``I got nominated in one category three times and lost, so that's proof (the academy doesn't favored Sony)'' said Emilio Estefan Jr., a Sony executive and producer and recipient of the academy's producer of the year award. ``I hope these awards unite people, that we band together. We all speak the same language.''

K.C. Porter, a record producer who won along with Santana for record of the year - the award goes to those involved in the recordings - said the Latin Grammy event is a good starting point Noun 1. starting point - earliest limiting point

``We have to start somewhere because Latin America is so large,'' he said backstage. ``I think we're going to realize how the process works, and we're going to see better representation from America to Chile and to Spain.''

The first award given on the telecast, which was broadcast in 105 countries, went to Dominican singer Juan Luis Guerra Juan Luis Guerra (born June 7, 1957 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) is one of the most internationally recognized Dominican singer/songwriters. Crossover sensation Ricky Martin kicked things off with an all-star tribute to Latin jazz giant Tito Puente, who died recently but was named winner of the best traditional tropical performance Grammy.

``Dad would be more than proud,'' said Puente's daughter, Audrey, 30. ``Everyone who is here was influenced by him in one way or another.''

Santana was joined by the Mexican rock quartet Mana for a reading of their hit ``Corazon Espinado,'' which earned the Grammy for record of the year and best rock performance by a duo or group with vocal.

Santana also won the best pop instrumental performance honor for ``El Farol,'' which like ``Corazon Espinado,'' is a track from his multimillion-selling comeback album, ``Supernatural.''

Formed three years ago, the 2,600-member Latin academy consists of voters from 15 countries. It's the first time music released outside the U.S. has been recognized by the Santa Monica-based record academy.

Salsa legend Celia Cruz, who won for best salsa performance, pointed out that both Grammy ceremonies are essentially the same.

``Now we're going to have more opportunities because before we didn't have any,'' she said in Spanish backstage. ``They (the academy) voted on who they knew.''

Actor Michael DeLorenzo, who was one of the presenters Wednesday, described what makes Latin music so appealing.

``This music is hot, it's all rhythmic and see that little outfit Shakira was wearing? That's what I'm talking about,'' he said.
