`LARRY' TO TAKE ANOTHER SHOT.Byline: Daily News Larry the Legend, the 1995 Santa Anita Derby winner who has been recovering from injuries, is close to returning to the races, said Craig Lewis, the horse's owner and trainer. The popular Illinois-bred is nominated to the $60,000 Dayjur Stakes - the closing-day feature at Hollywood Park - but is unlikely to start in the 5-1/2-furlong turf race. ``It's not out of the question, but it is unlikely,'' Lewis said. The 4-year-old bay colt has not raced since he bruised a foot while finishing fifth in the Crazy Kid Handicap at Del Mar on Sept. 4. Previously, Larry the Legend was sidelined for over a year after encountering knee problems following his Santa Anita Derby win. The son of Local Talent has been working steadily the past month at Santa Anita in preparation for next year's campaign. ``He's close to being ready to run,'' Lewis said. ``We've just got to tighten him down a bit and we're ready to go. ``We don't know anything with certainty,'' Lewis said. ``But we're considering a few spots at Santa Anita. Maybe we'll return to bigger and better things later in the year if he stays as good as he is right now, but you never know. We just want to take things a step at a time.'' Probables for the Dayjur: Cyrano Storme, Suggest, Silver Kite, Men's Exclusive, Stately Warrior and Hit the Roof. Also possible: Larry the Legend, Strangelove, Electrify, Touch the Moon, Banchory Baron, Pirate's Gulch, Salta Salta, city (1991 pop. 370,302) capital of Salta prov., NW Argentina, in the Lerma valley. It is the commercial center of a region rich in agricultural produce, minerals (chiefly oil), and forest products. Corn, tobacco, wine grapes, and livestock are shipped through the city. Salta has retained its colonial atmosphere. The cathedral is well known, and ruins of many 17th-century buildings dot the surrounding countryside.'s Pride and California Candi. Field takes shape: Sunday's $100,000 Native Diver Handicap will feature Dramatic Gold and Gentlemen, but not Kingdom Found or Cleante. ``I don't feel he's ready for this distance,'' trainer Rafael Becerra said. ``I'm pointing him at the Ack Ack on Dec. 28 for now. I was going to run him in the Jan. 12 San Pasqual Pasqual - ["Pasqual: A Proposed Generalization of Pascal", R.D. Tennent, TR75-32, Queen's U, Canada, 1975]., but that's going to be a tough race for him with Alphabet Soup, Savinio and Isitingood probably going. Right now, I'm going to wait to stretch him out in a graded stake.'' Cleante is suffering from a crack in his right front foot. Probables for the 1-1/8-mile Native Diver: Arrivederci Baby, Don't Blame Rio, Dramatic Gold, Gentlemen, Peyrano and Torole. |
