`JAG' CREW DEPLOYS IN NEWHALL; CIVIC CENTER MADE TO LOOK LIKE MILITARY BASE FOR DAY'S FILMING.

Byline: Mary Schubert / Daily News Staff Writer

Anyone who went to the Civic Center on Tuesday to pay a traffic ticket, check out a library book or visit the health center might have thought they had stumbled upon a military invasion.

Why else would there be two Humvees at curb and swarms of Marines in camouflage fatigues strolling the covered walkways?

Inside Newhall Municipal Court, the Public Defender's Office bore signs that read ``Military Justice'' and ``Senior Trial Counsel,'' and the courtrooms of Judges Alan Rosenfield, Floyd Baxter and H. Keith Byram had nameplates of two colonels.

On the lobby walls were Marine recruiting posters, a framed collection of 20 squadron patches and portraits of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff - Gen. Colin Powell Noun 1. Turns out it was just Hollywood at work, using the Civic Center as a backdrop for shooting the CBS (Cell Broadcast Service) See cell broadcast.  series ``JAG judge advocate general (J.A.G.) n. a military officer who advises the government on courts-martial and administers the conduct of courts-martial. The cast and crew spent most of the day filming scenes for its third episode of this season, expected to air in October, said assistant director Brian Faul.

In the pilot episode, he is introduced as a Judge Advocate with the rank of Lieutenant, and the viewer follows his career from
, three dozen extras dressed as Marines and scores of crew members filled the outdoor patios as curious passers-by watched the filming or just waited for a moment between takes to hustle past the cameras.

``JAG,'' a production of Paramount Television Paramount Television (re-incorporated from Desilu Productions) was an American television production/distribution company that was active from December 1967 to May 28, 2006 and was launched under Gulf+Western. , this season moved from that Hollywood studio to Valencia Studio West, where other tenants include the ``Mighty Morphin Power Rangers'' television show.

On Tuesday, the Civic Center doubled as the Marine Corps base at Camp Pendleton.

In a storyline with similarities to the recent scandal involving Lt. Kelly Flinn - the Air Force pilot accused of having an affair with a married man, lying to her superiors and disobeying orders - the ``JAG'' episode involves a court-martial of a female Marine helicopter pilot.

``She's being charged with having an affair with an enlisted man, one of her gun crew,'' Faul said.

Faul said each episode of the one-hour drama, from the creator of ``Magnum P.I.'' and ``Quantum Leap,'' takes about eight days to film. When filming at the Civic Center wraps, cast and crew will be off to Camp Pendleton for some more location shooting, he said.

Two people impressed by the activity were 8-year-old Elizabeth Krueger and her mom, Rose. They had come to the Valencia Public Library to pick up a book on dinosaurs and were excited to see the ``JAG'' cast.
