`IMPACT' TOPS U.S. BOX OFFICE; REDFORD DRAMA TAKES SECOND.

Byline: Dave McNary Daily News Staff Writer

``Deep Impact'' continued to dominate the nation's box office with an estimated $23.3 million in its second weekend at 3,192 theaters during the Friday-Sunday period, studio sources estimated Sunday.

The comet-vs.-Earth disaster epic has jump-started Hollywood's crucial summer season by earning an impressive $74 million in its first 10 days.

The release, handled domestically by Paramount and co-financed by DreamWorks SKG SKG Stichting Kwaliteit Gevelbouw (Dutch)

, should continue to draw well for several more weeks despite losing 43 percent from its opening weekend.

``For the disaster genre, `Deep Impact' has performed pretty decently,' said analyst Arthur Rockwell of Drake Capital. ``It should go well over $100 million domestically and will obviously play well overseas.

``Deep Impact'' will face massive competition from Sony's ``Godzilla,'' which opens Tuesday night and is expected to take in around $100 million by the end of Memorial Day.

This weekend's opening of Robert Redford's ``The Horse Whisperer'' also posted solid numbers with $13.2 million at 2,039 locations as it overcame mixed reviews.

The romance drama, carrying a $60 million price tag and based on Nicholas Evans' best seller, benefited from Disney's strong publicity campaign and the drawing power of Redford and co-star Kristin Scott Thomas Kristin Scott Thomas OBE (born 24 May 1960) is an Academy Award-nominated English actress.  returns, following tepid reviews, mark a major setback in the studio's strategy to set up a division to produce full-length animated features and also underscore the difficulty in marketing to the pre-teen audience.

The analyst said ``Mulan,'' Disney's animated Chinese fable should still perform well after it opens June 19, despite the poor debut for ``Camelot.''

`` `Mulan' looks like it has a lot more innovation than `Quest for Camelot,' '' Rockwell said.

Warner's sixth weekend of ``City of Angels'' finished fourth with $3.2 million and has gone past $66 million.

Disney's third weekend of ``He Got Game'' followed with $2.3 million, edging out Paramount's 22nd weekend of ``Titanic'' with $2.2 million at 1,990 theaters as the number of theaters showing the disaster epic fell by 266 sites from last weekend.

``Titanic'' now has a 150-day domestic total of $572.8 million, $111 million ahead of No. 2 ``Star Wars'' on the all-time domestic list.

DreamWorks' fifth weekend of ``Paulie'' finished seventh with $1.7 million, beating out New Line's second weekend of ``Woo'' with $1.6 million, Sony's third weekend of ``Les Miserables'' with $1.57 million and its fourth weekend of ``The Big Hit'' with $1.5 million.
