ALS editor Martyn McFadden said: "It's just a bit of a coincidence that we are releasing it this week, the week before the cup game. "We were going to release it anyway. Promotion is our main aim this season. We could have released the song at the start of next season and it would still be relevant. "The song is about Hooolio and his performances. "We've been messing around in the studio with the Hoolio tune and the b-side Mackem Maradona for around three months and after playing it to a few Sunderland fans we've decided to release it. "I'm sure it will be very popular, but really, it just started as a bit of fun when we got in from the pub. We hope Hooolio likes it, because he's a great player and deserves this accolade for his performances this season." Previous ALS singles have made an impact on the national charts. Niall Quinn's Disco Pants, released in April 1999, came in at number 59 in the national chart, outselling the then number one, Martine McCutcheon's Perfect Moment, 10 to one in the Sunderland area. Cheer Up Peter Reid was number 41 in the national chart in 1996 and both singles reached the top spot in the National Independent Charts. |
