She also sings on several songs and plays banjo banjo, stringed musical instrument, with a body resembling a tambourine. The banjo consists of a hoop over which a skin membrane is stretched; it has a long, often fretted neck and four to nine strings, which are plucked with a pick or the fingers. , bass and Autoharp.

Saturday, Cozmic Pizza

David Helfand's latest album, "At the Edge of the Cornish Sea," was released a year ago, but the Eugene multi-instrumentalist is just now putting on a CD release show.

Helfand and six others will do the album live at Cozmic Pizza, 199 W. Eighth Ave., starting at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Helfand, who has two other CDs to his name (`Callings From the Quiet Grove," "Beyond the Sea of Reeds') was inspired to craft the first few songs on his new album after a 2001 trip to England. The trip took him to the ruins of the Tintagel Castle Tintagel Castle (grid reference SX051889) is a castle currently in ruins found on Tintagel Head, located near Tintagel in Cornwall, England, UK. The tragedy, he says, almost prevented him from finishing the album.

`Here I was creating this album, and it became this incredible struggle of, `What's the point of art?' ' he said. "Finally, it came to me that if you're on Earth and not using the gifts you've been given, then what's the point?"

While Helfand's previous CD explored the music of the Middle East, his latest is somewhat of a concept album that blends Celtic sounds with ambient music Ambient music refers to a kind of music that envelops the listener without drawing attention to itself [1]

Joining him Saturday will be Brad Parshalle (keyboards), Jeff Schenck (bass), David Burham (violin), Allison Rickenbaugh (vocals, penny whistle), Wayne Gilbertson (Middle Eastern horn, percussion) and Mark Hurwit (drums).

Tickets are $7 at the door.
