`HUNCHBACK' BROADWAY-BOUND, MINUS SENTIMENTALITY.

Byline: Marilyn Beck & Stacy Jenel Smith

fare in 1996, now has the musical on the way to what may be a more fitting home.

We get word that Disney Theatrical Productions is preparing a stage version of ``The Hunchback of Notre Dame,'' using the music from the feature, but with a major change in tone - no cuteness, no sentimentality.

Naturally, a Broadway bow is on their minds - having struck gold there with ``Beauty and the Beast'' and ``The Lion King.''

Downs keeps getting up

Major U.S. television network. It began when the expanding national radio network NBC split into the separate Red and Blue networks in 1928.
Monday night special, ``Tales From the Tomb, Lost Sons of the Pharaoh,'' reports that filming was ``arduous'' - to say the least.

The program was lensed in Egypt's Kings Valley Tomb No. 5, believed to be the burial site of more than 50 sons of Ramses II. ``We were either out in the broiling broiling: see cooking.  sun or in the tomb, where it was stifling,'' says the broadcaster.

He would, however, undertake the assignment again without hesitation. Downs, who at age 76 still scuba dives and pilots planes, gliders and hot air balloons, thrives on hard work. In fact, he seems to be working harder than ever.

Co-hosting ``20/20'' on Thursdays as well as Fridays this season has been tough, he acknowledges. As he explains, doing the magazine show twice a week means that his and Barbara Walters' field work has doubled.

It also means the responsibility of being on call twice as often - in the event a breaking news story necessitates tearing apart a program and rushing back to the studio to cover the news event live.

``I'm sure it will shake down to a tolerable situation,'' he says. But he admits he's not sure how.

Director Penny Marshall returns to acting for a guest stint on a forthcoming ``Nash Bridges.'' She'll play a police inspector looking into the work of Don Johnson and Cheech Marin.

It had to happen. Pre-production is under way on ``Dodi and Diana,'' a British TV movie. It'll shoot in Spain and England at the end of January.

Bitten by the bug

The members of the hot singing group, En Vogue (Maxine Jones, Terry Ellis and Cindy Herron), who've done cameos and guest spots on TV shows, are ready to be taken seriously as actresses. In fact, says Jones, they've instructed their agents to pursue some straight acting gigs for them. ``Cindy already had the acting bug. She's done a movie of the week and had a part in the movie `Juice,' and Terry and I want to do more of it.

The big-screen scene

Reaction to the trailer for the reissue of ``Grease'' has been so strong that Paramount is now going to have the promotional clip playing on 3,500 screens - including those showing the studio's expected blockbuster, ``Titanic.''

The new, old ``Grease'' won't hit the screen until next March, and by that time it will be the subject of a picture book put together by Didi DIDI Digital Image Design Incorporated (New York)  Conn, who was a member of the original cast. Producer Alan Carr tells us that Didi has gotten the members of the original team to provide her with personal snapshots they took while they were making the film 20 years ago.
