`HEARTSOUNDS' BENEFIT TO AID CENTER FOR KIDS.

Byline: Joanne Crawford Education

LANCASTER - The Children's Center of the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

The Antelope Valley
will hold its yearly ``Heartsounds'' fund-raising event Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. at the Lancaster Performing Arts Center A performing arts center, often abbreviated PAC, is a multi-use performance space that can be adapted for use by various types of the performing arts, including dance, music and theatre. , 750 W. The theme for this year's show is ``At The Hop,'' featuring the 1950s- style singing group Sha Na Na Sha Na Na is a rock and roll revivalist/comedy group from New York City, who perform covers of doo wop hits from the 1950s, simultaneously reviving and sending up the music, as well as 1950s New York street culture, in their performances. , center director of resource development Ingrid Chapman said.

Proceeds go to the center for its programs to combat and deal with child abuse, she said.

Last year's show was centered on a Broadway theme and was hosted by actress and singer Carol Lawrence.

A tradition of the annual show has been to auction off memorabilia donated by celebrities.

, Chapman said.

More information on this year's event will be released in the coming weeks.

On July 20, center officials were presented a check for almost $6,700 raised at its recent second annual golf tournament, Chapman said. The event was sponsored by Robertson's Palmdale Honda, Chapman said.

``The tournament sponsors wanted the money to go toward areas of greatest need,'' Chapman said. ``To keep up with the growing population, the center needs more room. They have leased more space in the office complex, which houses the child abuse treatment agency, but they have not had the funds to build out the space to meet their needs. The ceiling has to be dropped for air and heating, and therapy and office areas have to be defined and built.

``Once the center fully utilizes the space, the center can provide a healthy and safer work environment to staff and children,'' she said.

Secondly, some of the money will be earmarked for a bilingual treatment program tailored to fit very young children with parents who speak Spanish only, Chapman said.

The Children's Center is a private, nonprofit community-based agency.

The agency gladly accepts donations and is always seeking business sponsorships.
