`H.M.S. PINAFORE' TO SAIL OFF INTO SUNSET.

Byline: Victoria Giraud / Special to the Daily News

Gilbert and Sullivan's satirical light operas remain timeless. ``H.M.S. Pinafore,'' an amusing musical romp that makes good fun of the British navy, will close its run this weekend at the Arts Council Center.

The production, the third Gilbert-and-Sullivan work done by Comedy Tonight Productions, features some truly excellent voices and a very funny story line.

Capt. Corcoran (Lloyd Allen) commands Her Majesty's ship "HBMS" redirects here. HBMS may also stand for Handsome Boy Modeling School.
His or Her Majesty's Ship (HMS) is the title used for ships of the navy in some monarchies, either formally or informally.
Pinafore. He is eagerly awaiting the upcoming betrothal of his daughter Josephine (Patricia Lathrop-McPherson) to Sir Joseph Porter, First Lord of the Admiralty (Andrew Krigel). Trouble is, Josephine, much to her high-class chagrin, is in love with lowly seaman Ralph Rackstraw (Lance Taubold).

Rackstraw is supported in his impossible yearnings by fellow singing sailors Bill Bobstay bob·stay

Sir Joseph brings his ``sister's and his cousin's and his aunt's'' entourage aboard the Pinafore. He prances about singing the well-known song about his rise to First Lord - an amusing tale of brightly polished doorknobs and perfect penmanship that earns him the honors and fortune of aristocracy.

Lending melodic voice as his sisters, cousins and aunts are Selma Sykes, Kimberly Jaffe, Caren Fleck, Jo-Jo Sykes, Cathy Russel and Amanda Bianchi. A particularly vivid performance was given by Carmen Carmen

Little Buttercup (Joy C. Bangasser), who secretly loves the captain, will upset everyone's plans when she reveals that things are not what they seem. Because she was a wet nurse, she knows that two males babies were given to the wrong parents. Rackstraw is really a nobly born patrician, while the captain is, in truth, lowborn low·born

In the end, everyone happily accepts their fate. The captain becomes a lowly sailor, while Rackstraw dons the captain's outfit and automatically takes over. Naturally, he also gets the girl, and Josephine gladly accepts him.

Kudos to Gabriel Vega for his producing and co-direction.
