``Friends'' co-creator/co-executive producer Marta Kauffman Marta Kauffman (born September 21, 1956) is an American TV producer and writer and the creator of the TV series Friends with David Crane. She points out that, ``In general, the Emmys have ignored the show - and to a great extent the cast.'' If the show doesn't cop a trophy for best comedy on Sept. 12, it will be a three-time loser.)

Kauffman notes that ``childish as it may seem, the reception we've received from the TV academy - and the knocking we got from the press at first - has hurt my feelings. But we have had to look beyond all that and focus on the fact we have the important things: a great cast and writing staff and a popular show.''

In the running with ``Friends'' this year are ``Ally McBeal For the character, see .

She has a hunch that ``Raymond'' will win its first Emmy. But if she's wrong, and ``Friends'' is announced as Best Comedy?

``We'll stay frozen in our seats - convinced it must be `Frasier' again. They start with the same letters.''

The Billy Bob beat

The busy Billy Bob is now in post-production on the Columbia/Miramax adaptation of ``All the Pretty Horses All the Pretty Horses is a novel by U.S. author Cormac McCarthy published in 1992. Its romanticism (in contrast to the apocalyptic bleakness of McCarthy's earlier work) brought the writer much public attention, spending some time on bestseller charts, earning the U.S. ,'' in which he directed Matt Damon. That's due out in February, by which time Thornton will likely be directing and starring in the adaptation of Annie L. Proulx's Pulitzer Prize-winning ``The Shipping News.''

`Miracles' stumbles

Filmmaker Jerry Zucker is no longer involved with ``A Course in Miracles'' (``We couldn't work out the budget, the actors,'' he says). However, Caravan Pictures is proceeding with the drama about a young priest undergoing a crisis of faith, who's assigned by the Vatican to verify or discount claims of miracles. A script has been completed, and production - originally planned for June '98 - is now being targeted for early next year.

Quincy Jones III, an Emmy nominee for the theme music on Eddie Murphy's animated ``The PJs'' show, considers his legendary musician/composer dad, Quincy Jones, ``still the hardest working man I know on the planet.''

The younger Jones, known as QDIII, is doing his best to take up the mantle. Also a musician/composer (who's scored such TV series as ``Fresh Prince of Bel-Air'' and ``In the House,'' and such films as ``Menace II Society,'' ``Panther'' and ``Gang Related''), he's juggling several music projects. They include: doing the music for UPN's new ``Grown Ups'' sitcom with Jaleel White; producing a couple of songs with TLC's T-Boz for the upcoming ``Rugrats'' movie soundtrack; and helming the release of the late rapper Tupac Shakur's next CD.

Jones says the prolific Shakur left enough songs in the can for ``at least five or six albums. The new disc is called ``Tupac and the Outlaws,'' and should be out in a few weeks.''

The Peter principle

Peter Frampton is providing his unique expertise to DreamWorks' untitled Cameron Crowe movie project as music consultant. Crowe's flick centers on a fictional up-and-coming '70s band - and stars Billy Crudup, Frances McDormand, Anna Paquin and Kate Hudson.

Frampton and Crowe go back to the early '70s, when Frampton was a chart-topping music phenom, and ``Jerry Maguire''-maker Crowe was a precocious teen-age rock writer - who penned the liner notes for the record-smashing ``Frampton Comes Alive.'' Lately, Frampton's been educating the cast of Crowe's movie about the ways of '70s rock stars, even giving a ``rock 'n' roll rock 'n' roll: see rock music.  school'' to help them capture the spirit.
