`FIRST WIVES' NO. 1 FOR 2ND STRAIGHT WEEK.

The get-even comedy ``First Wives Club'' was the top-grossing film in North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere.  for the second straight week, earning an estimated $15.5 million in ticket sales, industry sources said Sunday.

The movie, with Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler Bette Midler (born December 1 1945) is an American singer, actress and comedienne, also known to her fans as The Divine Miss M. She is named after the actress Bette Davis although Davis pronounced her first name in two syllables, and Midler uses one.  and Diane Keaton as spurned spurn

In third place was ``Last Man Standing,'' with $4.1 million, followed by the debut film ``2 Days in the Valley,'' with $3.48 million and ``Fly Away Home,'' with $3.2 million.

The sci-fi thriller ``Independence Day'' continued to perform well, finishing sixth with an estimated $2.5 million. It has earned more than $293 million in 13 weeks of release.

Final figures are to be released today. The weekend top 10 based on preliminary estimates:

1. ``The First Wives Club,'' $15.5 million.

2. ``Extreme Measures,'' $7.1 million.

3. ``Last Man Standing,'' $4.2 million.

4. ``2 Days in the Valley,'' $3.48 million.

5. ``Fly Away Home,'' $3.2 million.

6. ``Independence Day,'' $2.5 million.
