``Entrapment'' ensnared the nation's moviegoers as the action-adventure dominated at multiplexes with a record-setting $21.3 million at 2,814 theaters during the Friday-Sunday weekend, studio sources said Sunday Sunday: see Sabbath; week. .

The 20th Century Fox release, starring Sean Connery Connery is a surname, and may refer to:
  • Edward Connery (born 1933), politician
  • Jason Connery (born 1963), English actor
  • Lawrence J. Connery (1895-1941), Irish-American politician

as a master thief and Catherine Zeta-Jones as his pursuer, took in one-third of the total box office and performed above industry expectations during a traditionally soft period for moviegoing.

``Entrapment'' benefited from drawing a broad cross-section cross section also cross-sec·tion

`` `Entrapment' scored big numbers with date crowds and also with younger audiences drawn by the action theme,'' said Robert Bucksbaum, president of the Reel Source tracking service. ``The combination of Sean Connery (for women) and Catherine Zeta-Jones (for men) paid off big for Fox.''

``Entrapment'' set a record for an April opening, topping the $20.6 million set two weeks ago by ``Life.'' Bucksbaum predicted ``Entrapment'' will take in $70 million by the end of its run.

Overall box office receipts hit $61 million, up 4 percent from the same weekend last year when ``He Got Game'' led with only $7.6 million.

``Entrapment'' will face strong competition next weekend from Universal's ``The Mummy mummy, dead human or animal body preserved by embalming or by unusual natural conditions. As a rule mummies are from ancient times. The word is of Arabic derivation and refers primarily to the burials found in Egypt, where the practice of mummification was perfected ,'' the last major release before ``Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace'' on May 19.

``Entrapment'' matched the combined total of the next four films, led by Warner Bros BROS Brothers

.' fifth weekend of ``The Matrix'' with $8.7 million at 2,903 theaters to push its total to nearly $130 million.

Bucksbaum noted that the strong performances by ``Entrapment'' and ``The Matrix'' have disproved the theory that studios need to open high-profile action-adventures in the summer or holiday period to score blockbuster-type numbers.

Universal's third weekend of ``Life'' took third with 6.4 million at 2,615 theaters, followed by Fox's fourth weekend of ``Never Been Kissed'' with $4.1 million at 2,484 screens, and Warner's ninth weekend of ``Analyze This'' with $2.2 million at 2,128 screens. ``Analyze This'' has topped $98 million after 59 days and will soon become the second 1999 film to reach the $100 million milestone.

Disney's fifth weekend of ``10 Things I Hate About You'' came in sixth with $1.8 million at 2,020 theaters, edging Sony's opening of ``Idle Hands'' a teen horror comedy with $1.78 million at 1,611 screens.

Bucksbaum noted the studio had scaled back its marketing campaign for ``Idle Hands'' in the wake of the Colorado school shooting
