There are about 1,735 oak trees on the site. The canyon, the backdrop of Warner Bros.' 1980s TV series ``The Dukes of Hazzard,'' is home to a number of ecologically sensitive plant and animal species. Of concern is the canyon's potential for landslides and seismic activity. Sensors in place during the 1994 Northridge Earthquake showed the strongest shaking in that very region. Susan Tae, a supervising regional planner for Los Angeles County, said the potential seismic activity was a concern but that grading would lessen the danger. The entertainment company's development spinoff -- created to develop the property -- plans 95 single-family homes and a condominium complex with 90 units designated for seniors. Lyons Canyon Ranch would cover 232 acres west of Interstate 5, just north of Calgrove Boulevard. It would lie between the Sunset Pointe tract and Towsley Canyon State Park. More than half the land would be preserved as open space, and lots would be reserved for a county fire station and a small park. A trail system also is planned. Because the site is marked by the steep slopes of the Santa Susana mountain range, 3.8million cubic yards of earth would be graded to allow for construction. pat.aidem@dailynews.com (661) 257-5251 CAPTION(S): map Map: 185-home development |
