`DINNER BASKET AUCTION' EVENT SET PARTY WILL HELP SHELTER TO ASSIST VIOLENCE VICTIMS.Byline: Daily News LANCASTER -- The Antelope Valley's domestic-violence shelter will benefit from the 21st annual Starlight Garden Party. Featuring the Valley Oasis Amigas' ``Dinner Basket Auction,'' the party will be held Aug. 12 at Villa de Leon, 6612 E. Ave. K, Lancaster. ``The event not only provides the agency with necessary funding, but is a chance for the community to show its support for victims of domestic violence domestic violence n. the continuing crime and problem of the physical beating of a wife, girlfriend or children, usually by the woman's male partner (although may be female violence against a male). Sometimes a woman's dependence, low self-esteem, and fear of leaving cause her to endure this conduct or fail to protect a child. in the Antelope Valley,'' said Carol Ensign, Antelope Valley Domestic Violence Council executive director. The party will begin with a silent auction at 5 p.m. The dinner basket auction will begin at 6 p.m. The Antelope Valley Domestic Violence Shelter was started 26 years ago with the help of Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, who provided the site. The Valley Oasis Amigas formed in 1984 to raise money to support the shelter and its program and to educate the public about domestic violence. The group has contributed over $500,000 toward programs, development and expansion. The dinner basket auction is the Amigas' primary fundraiser. Past auction items have included a private yacht trip, a B-2 stealth bomber model and test pilot jacket, a seven-day trip to Spain, jewelry and dinners from local restaurants. ``For the last 21 years the Amigas have been committed to helping stop domestic violence in the Antelope Valley,'' said Amigas President Eva Eveland. ``The Amigas depends on the generosity and support of the Antelope Valley community. We would like to thank them for their generous support in helping to fight domestic violence.''
