`DEFINED BY THE MUSIC' RILO KILEY SOUNDS OFF ON ITS NAME AND GROWING FAME.

Byline: Fred Shuster Music Writer

In a few more months, hardly anyone is going to ask the members of indie-pop quartet Rilo Kiley Rilo Kiley is a Los Angeles-based indie rock band. Band members include Jenny Lewis, Blake Sennett, Pierre de Reeder and Jason Boesel. History

, ``Hey, which one's Rilo?''

The group, whose twee, lightly produced folk-pop has struck a nerve with folks who a generation earlier might've been lining up to see the Sundays, will soon embark on 21 arena dates with Coldplay. It appears to be an ideal match.

Like their chart-topping touring partners, with whom they share a management company, Rilo Kiley makes oddly uplifting songs of heartbreak, drawing on classic rock and pop. Hushed, lightly picked acoustic-guitar numbers often swell into charming, fully realized pieces. Lyrics are personal meditations that could've been lifted from a bedside diary.

``It started slowly, by people coming to the shows and supporting us and telling their friends,'' says bassist Pierre de Reeder Pierre de Reeder (b. 1973) is the bassist for Rilo Kiley. He attended La Jolla High School, the same high school as Blake Sennett, and joined the band in 1998. When not playing with Rilo Kiley, Pierre works on his solo project. He was formerly known as Duke de Reeder. . ``It crept upward. The biggest push came from below, not above.''

There is no Rilo, nor a Kiley in the Los Angeles-based group. The name was dreamed up by guitarist-singer Blake Sennett Blake Sennett (born September 22, 1973 in San Diego, California) is the lead guitarist for indie rock band Rilo Kiley and the lead singer, lead guitarist for his alt rock side project The Elected. Blake attended La Jolla Country Day School. , who formed the quartet in 1998 with fellow former child actor Jenny Lewis on vocals/keyboards, and, later, drummer Jason Boesel.

San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay. . ``It has to be defined by the music.''

After years of recording, relentlessly slogging around the clubs, slowly developing an audience and making powerful friends, Rilo Kiley was hailed the greatest rock act of 2004 in Rolling Stone rolling stone

Rilo Kiley appears Saturday on the first night of the two-day Sunset Junction Street Fair The Sunset Junction Street Fair is an event held annually in the Sunset Junction neighborhood of the Silver Lake community in Los Angeles, California. Occurring annually in late August, the two-day neighborhood festival was first held in 1980 as a way to quell tensions between the  in Silver Lake. ``It's our hometown street scene thing,'' de Reeder said. ``It's a fun event and, historically, it's had some great bands. We like being a prominent part of it.''

One of the band's draws is Lewis, a Valley native who worked on TV commercials and sitcoms as a child before appearing in ``Pleasantville'' and starring alongside Fred Savage in 1989's ``The Wizard'' while still a teenager. (Songwriting partner Sennett can be seen in reruns of TV's ``Boy Meets World'')

But even from the quartet's earliest days, the musicians felt their music was the most important thing in their lives.

``We've all been big avoiders of day jobs, so we prematurely thought we could keep the band as a main thing,'' said de Reeder, a fan of classic Neil Young and Bob Dylan. ``Only in the past year has it been tangible. Whenever we made any money over the years, we were very self-sufficient and always reinvested in the band.''

Life for Rilo Kiley will almost certainly change as a result of the Coldplay dates, which take place in the Midwest and East Coast and include a couple of nights at Madison Square Garden Coordinates:

. The invitation arose after Rilo Kiley opened for Coldplay in Las Vegas, and singer Chris Martin liked what he heard.

``We tour a lot,'' de Reeder said. ``But the arena thing - yeah, that's completely another way to put your music across.''
