`CRASH' GETS A BIG BOOST FROM OSCAR AMAZON SALES FOR BEST PICTURE WINNER UP 650% IN DAY AFTER VICTORY.

Byline: Greg Hernandez Staff Writer

Usually winning Best Picture at the Academy Awards assures a film of a post-victory box office boost. But for ``Crash,'' the boost is coming on home video, where the film zoomed to the No. 2 spot Monday on the Amazon.com list of hot sellers.

Prior to Sunday's Oscars, ``Crash'' was at No. 15 on Amazon. Its sales increased by a stunning 650 percent in less than 24 hours.

``Crash,'' a surprise winner over pre-show front-runner ``Brokeback Mountain,'' was released in May, finished its run with an unspectacular domestic gross of $53.4 million, and was released on DVD DVD: see digital versatile disc.

``There are quite a few people out there who have not seen the film and have no idea what it is,'' said Ralph Tribbey, editor of DVD Release Report, an industry newsletter. ``You have to expect that a lot of people, out of curiosity, will take a look at either renting or buying.''

Had `Brokeback' won top honors, it would have had much to gain at the box office. It had grossed $78.9 million as of Sunday and was already the highest grossing film competing for Best Picture. The film won in the Director, Adapted Screenplay screenplay

and Original Score categories but lost in the Actor, Supporting Actor supporting actor nattore m non protagonista  and Supporting Actress supporting actress nattrice f non protagonista  categories as well as Best Picture, and now it is questionable whether the film will be able to reach the $100 million mark.

``There's no question that a win for Best Picture would have helped `Brokeback' achieve even greater box office status,'' said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Exhibitor Relations Co. ``But it's done so well anyway. People are still talking about `Brokeback' and it got all this exposure on the Oscar telecast.''

Had it won, ``Brokeback'' would have been in a similar position as last year's Best Picture winner ``Million Dollar Baby,'' which had earned $64.9 million as of the evening of the 2005 Oscar telecast. It went on to gross a total of $100.4 million by the end of its theatrical run.

While ``Crash'' is expected to return to 150 theaters, it joins ``Capote,'' starring Best Actor winner Philip Seymour Hoffman For other persons named Philip Hoffman, see Philip Hoffman (disambiguation).

, ``Walk the Line'' (Best Actress Reese Witherspoon) and ``The Constant Gardener,'' featuring Best Supporting Actress Rachel Weisz, as major Oscar winners already on DVD or set to be released on DVD this month.

All are currently among the top 25 sellers on Amazon.com along with Best Documentary Feature winner ``March of the Penguins'' and ``Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit,'' which took the Best Animated Feature Film prize.

``Crash'' director, co-writer and co-producer Paul Haggis will likely be surprised by the surge in interest in his film this week.

``I thought we did this big bump after we did `Oprah' and I looked at the DVD sales and they didn't actually go up that much after that,'' he said Sunday after the Oscar ceremony. ``But I think awareness went up a lot.''
