`CARS' RETAINS LEAD SPOT `NACHO,' `TOKYO DRIFT' DEBUT STRONG.

``Cars'' had a $60 million opening last weekend, which while tremendous for most films, was about $10 million short of expectations. But the movie has managed to make up some ground on weekdays, grossing another $24 million heading into its second weekend.

The robust ticket sales for the top three films led the movie industry to its fifth consecutive weekend -- and 12 out of the last 13 -- in which revenues topped the same weekend last year, according to according to

Paramount Pictures' ``Nacho'' easily exceeded both studio and industry predictions with its debut of $27.5 million. The comedy drew an audience that was 53 percent male and 55 percent under 25. It should prove quite profitable for the studio since it had a production budget of just $35 million.

``I thought we gave `Cars' a pretty good run for its money,'' said Don Harris, Paramount's executive vice president and sales manager sales manager ngerente m/f de ventas

Universal Pictures' ``Furious'' crossed the finish line in third place with estimated ticket sales of $24.1 million domestically, and opened in first place in five of the eight foreign territories where it bowed, including the United Kingdom and Australia. The audience for ``Furious'' was 58 percent male and 60 percent under 25.

``It exceeded industry expectations with solid numbers and great exit polls,'' said Nikki Rocco, Universal's president of distribution. ``There's solid word of mouth, and all of this bodes very well for solid legs in the coming weeks.''

Warner distribution head Dan Fellman noted that ``The Notebook,'' a romance film that took in more than $80 million two summers ago, had a similar opening of $13.4 million.

It was a mixed weekend for 20th Century Fox, which celebrated the continued success of ``X-Men: The Last Stand,'' which added $7.15 million in ticket sales for a total of $215.5 million domestically to become the highest grossing ``X-Men'' film in the trilogy A company founded in 1979 by Gene Amdahl to commercialize wafer scale integration and build supercomputers.
