`Body Electric' to hit stage; Performance set at Lunenburg High.

Byline: Lynne Klaft

LUNENBURG - The Guild Dancers will present "The Body Electric" June 13 and 14 at the Lunenburg High School Lunenburg High School is the high school of the town of Lunenburg, Massachusetts in north-central Worcester County, and is located at 1079 Massachusetts Avenue. Since the 2000-01 school year the schools administration has consisted of Mr. Michael Barney (Principal) and Mr.  auditorium.

"We just hope to keep dancing. We're fortunate to have as many volunteers as we do to keep our mission of arts in the community alive, as the arts everywhere are going through difficult economic times now.

"It's been a challenge, but the spirit is wonderful!" said Martha Lane Browne, artistic director of the company, which is now in its 28th year.

The performance group's first number and theme piece, "The Body Electric," choreographed by Ms. Browne, with music by Michael Gore and Dean Pitchford, inspired by the Walt Whitman poem "I Sing the Body Electric," has been in the Guild Dancers' repertoire since 1988, but has only been performed a few times.

"In February, the high school class spent all of one day learning the piece and we've been rehearsing it since - and we end the program with a piece from the musical `Fame,' a very empowering piece for the younger generation," Ms. Browne said.

inspiration to dancers since hitting the stage in the late 1980's.

"It resonates with all ages and audiences. I remember when the television show was about to be canceled, our dancers wrote a letter to the network and they got a letter and poster back signed by the producers and actors. It spoke to a whole generation then, and the hope is that it will to a whole new generation today," Ms. Browne said.

The first includes a newly choreographed piece by Ellen Guglietti, "Rain Rain Beautiful Rain," "This Island Earth" by the middle school dancers, an all-drumming, mesmerizing mes·mer·ize

After the intermission, the second four-part segment, described as "the spirit and sheer joy of dancing" by Ms. Browne, begins with "Billy Elliot," continues with music from Benny Goodman's "Rattle and Roll," the Gipsy Kings' "Bambelo," and concludes with a high energy, newly choreographed piece by Ms. Browne from "Hair Spray" - "You Can't Stop the Beat."

"`Billy Elliot' is a huge musical in London, and is coming to New York New York, state, United States

The composition class has also created a dance of its own, "Trust for All Seasons."

"These are seniors that have been dancing together for 10 years. Last fall their assignments were based on trusting each other - lifts, throws - they brought in the music and it's evolved into a very exciting piece," Ms. Browne said.

The Guild dancers spent their Memorial Day weekend rehearsing. All of them.

"Curt (Ahokas) and I feel that doing small good things, coming together, being a part of something is what the Guild is about. We had a poster board and everyone wrote a little something on it. Some of it was hilarious, some touching," Ms. Browne said.

"I waved to a man on the street. ... I corrected the spelling and grammar on this poster. ... I hugged everyone. ... I fed the baby while mom was on the phone. ... I gave my only cookie cookie
