and sheriff's captains all turned out for a seemingly mundane occurrence - a new traffic signal.

But this signal is at 165th Street East on Highway 138 - labeled ``Blood Alley'' for its regular crashes - and it had been sought by residents of nearby Crystalaire and Llano for at least six years.

``How many years has it been to try to get a traffic light at a dangerous corner? It's got to be some traffic light when you're going to have a dedication at the light,'' said State Sen. W.J. ``Pete'' Knight, R-Palmdale, who has sponsored bills to widen Highway 138. ``It is a dangerous highway and we need to continue our efforts on improving the safety of Highway 138.''

Installed at a cost of $158,000, split by Caltrans and Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County, the signal dedicated Friday actually was turned on about two weeks ago. The intersection earlier got right- and left-turn lanes, so vehicles slowing to make the turn aren't rear-ended by speeding motorists.

Crossing the highway at 165th without the signal meant taking your life in your hands, officials and residents said.

``On a Friday night here with busy traffic, you could sit here for 15 minutes and couldn't get safely across,'' said Joseph Healy Joseph Healy (August 21, 1776 - October 10, 1861) was a United States Representative from New Hampshire. He was born in Newton, Massachusetts. He completed preparatory studies and then worked as a hotel keeper. He also engaged in agricultural pursuits. , a Crystalaire resident for 14 years. ``People start taking chances to get out.''

Two lanes in the middle of the desert, about three miles east of Pearblossom, the intersection gets more cross-traffic than it would seem, residents and officials said.

But 165th Street is used by Crystalaire residents, by skiers heading to Mountain High ski resort, by Valyermo residents and by a surprising large number of trucks coming off Palmdale Boulevard and Avenue T, many of them hauling vegetables from fields near Lake Los Angeles.

The signal could help slow down traffic on Highway 138, which is heavily traveled by fast-moving vehicles, including weekend motorists heading to Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911.
