`BIG-HEADED' DISASTER ALEMANY DENIED TITLE SHOT AGAIN ROSARY 63, ALEMANY 49.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

Kate Beckler isn't sure what's worse, losing in the quarterfinals or the semifinals.

But this much she knows: For the second straight season - and in her final year at Alemany High of Mission Hills no less - the Indians INDIANS. The aborigines of this country are so called.

, made sure of that Saturday night, outworking and outplaying Alemany in a 61-49 Division III-AA semifinal victory at Harvard-Westlake.

Last year the Indians' season ended in the quarterfinals. They went a step farther this time, but it doesn't much matter to Beckler, Alemany's Rice University-bound guard and one of the region's top players.

First round, quarterfinals, semifinals. It doesn't matter. All that does is the Indians won't be playing in the division final.

Again.

Alemany's season isn't over - the Indians will play in the Division III State Championships - but that was little consolation for Beckler, who won a Southern Section championship as a sophomore.

``It's the same exact thing as last year,'' said Beckler, who had 15 points. ``We thought we had it so bad. They're intensity level was like 100 percent and ours was 50 percent. We just came out too bigheaded. It wasn't good at all.''

Surprisingly, the fourth-seeded Royals had an easy time against No. 1 Alemany, using their size advantage down low to hurt the Indians inside, getting a terrific all-around game from Maggie Barnett (20 points) and, perhaps most importantly Adv. 1. most importantly - above and beyond all other consideration; "above all, you must be independent"

Jenise Karcher had 18 points for Rosary, while Bridget O'Connell had 11 points and 11 rebounds. Jen Farmer added 14 rebounds for the Royals, who led by as many as 16 points in the fourth quarter.

Alemany, which had an early six-point lead, but fell behind for good 15-14 in the second quarter, got little offense from anyone outside of Beckler and Nyasha Bralock, who had 13 points and 12 rebounds. No other Indian scored in double figures.

``It wasn't easy, they're a good team and they come at you,'' said Rosary coach Richard Yoon. ``You've got to be able to slow them down.''
