about joining him on the road to do some live performances of their ``Healing Angel'' album.

Roma says she'd love to perform the ``lovely piece of work . . . of Celtic soundscapes and spoken word.''

However, the challenges of her schedule may well be too steep, she notes.

``We get very little time off. I work many hours a week, and I'm also a single parent of a gorgeous 3-year-old. The time I'm not working, I'm spending with her.''

The series set, in fact, is a second home to her daughter, Reilly Marie - with whom Roma spent part of her summer hiatus visiting family in Ireland.

``I was pregnant while doing the show, the crew has known her from the beginning. She's practically grown up here. And Della Reese Della Reese (born Delloreese Patricia Early on July 6, 1931), is a famous American Emmy nominated actor and Grammy nominated singer. She started her career in the late 1950s as a successful Jazz singer, best known for her 1959 hit single "Don't You Know". , who is an amazing friend in my life, is her godmother.''

In spite of her desire to branch out, Downey makes it clear she's still thrilled with her series.

``This year, for the first time in a couple of seasons, we had some really good competition,'' she says, referring to such Sunday night Sunday Night, later named Michelob Presents Night Music, was an NBC late-night television show which aired for two seasons between 1988 and 1990 as a showcase for jazz and eclectic musical artists.  shows as ``Third Watch'' and ``Felicity.''

``But we managed to work our way into the Top 5 again.''

The sci-fi scene

Travolta in his forthcoming ``Battlefield, Earth''?

``Amazingly evil, really consummately evil,'' laughs Forest Whitaker, who plays Travolta's fellow alien in the sci-fi epic due out next year.

Whitaker tells us that ``Battlefield'' is ``unlike anything I've seen before. I know it's been compared to `Planet of the Apes,' but it's very dark underneath, dealing with relationships, greed, a holocaust. I think it's going to be really good.''

One might not think of the actor who rose to fame in ``The Crying Game'' and made his name as a director with ``Waiting to Exhale'' - and who previously starred with Travolta in ``Phenomenon'' - as an obvious choice to play an alien creature.

But Whitaker says that he's a huge sci-fi fan and just hasn't had the chance to do a genre film before.

``It was wild, because we'd spend hours in makeup. Our characters are about 8 feet tall: We wear these boots to make us really tall - and armor.

As an actor, if gives you a lot to play off of - when you're that far up, the world looks pretty different, and it's easy to feel superior.''

Next, Whitaker will be seen in HBO's Dec. 11 ``Witness Protection,'' which has him as a U.S. marshal trying to train mob informant Tom Sizemore and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (born November 17, 1958 in Lombard, Illinois) is an American actress and singer of Italian descent.
