`ANGEL' A RAW PORTRAIT THAT FEELS LIKE REAL LIFE.

Byline: - David Kronke

`Angel Rodriguez'' is about a teenager whose life story is bleakly familiar today, when the sad particulars of the on-edge lives of urban youths are accepted fact.

But Jim McKay James Kenneth McManus, better known by his professional name of Jim McKay (b. September 24 1921, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American television sports journalist. , director/co-writer of this couple-of-days-in-the-life portrait, isn't interested in preaching to the choir: He just wants viewers to settle in and consider the randomness of the reality of one young at-risk teen.

Jonan Everett, in his first film role, gives an impossibly nuanced performance as Angel, whose father has tossed him from his home in favor of a new girlfriend. (We come to understand that Angel may bear some culpability culpability (See: culpable)  in his father's decision.) Nicole (Rachel Griffiths), a school counselor A school counselor is a counselor and educator who works in schools, and have historically been referred to as "guidance counselors" or "educational counselors," although "Professional School Counselor" is now the preferred term. , has opted to bring Angel into her home. Whether her decision is born of sheer altruism or a deeper dissatisfaction with her own life is up for debate.

McKay is not one to offer easy answers on anything. What he does revel in are long, exquisitely observed moments that probe the very essence of his characters' souls. In an era of frenetic editing and propulsive soundtracks, the solemn quietude McKay establishes may be off-putting to some viewers and brilliantly nervy to others.

Though largely well-intentioned, Angel's no angel: He's prone to violent confrontation and has trouble following through on efforts to improve his lot in life. In other words Adv. 1. in other words - otherwise stated; "in other words, we are broke"

, he's a pretty fully fleshed out human being.

While watching ``Angel Rodriguez,'' there are times when viewers will reasonably wonder, ``Where is this going?'' And that's the point:

McKay himself wants his audience to ponder the fates of both his protagonists and our society at large.
