`ALL GO AND NO SHOW': FOR THE LOVE OF WRESTLING A.V.'S ERIC TIMSON TAKES AIM AT THE STATE TOURNAMENT.

PALMDALE - Lancaster High coach Pat Hayhurst calls him the best wrestler in the Golden League.

Ron Coleman goes further, saying Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

The Antelope Valley
of Lancaster senior Eric Timson is the best in the league at 11 of the 14 weight classes - and maybe more.

Coleman's enthusiasm is understandable, considering he has been Timson's coach for four seasons at Antelope Valley, watching him compile To translate a program written in a high-level programming language into machine language. Twenty-two of those pins have come this season - the most significant of them igniting a rally that produced arguably ar·gu·a·ble

The object is to secure a fall, i.e., cause the opponent to lose balance and fall to the floor, and ultimately to pin the supine opponent's shoulders to the floor, through the use of body  history.

who went 3 for 3 Saturday to win the league 140 title. ``Pound for pound, he is the absolute best wrestler in this league by far - and if he could put on enough weight, the heavyweights would be running from him.''

High praise for a wrestler who hadn't won a league title before this season. Timson's combination of athleticism and sportsmanship generates that kind of reaction.

``He's a great wrestler,'' said Highland coach Mike Young, who has seen many of the best in a 31-year career that has produced a state-leading 602 victories. ``He's real aggressive, but also a real classy class·y

kid who has all the tools. And he's great on his feet - there's no way of avoiding him.''

Timson's cousin, Greg Burton, was among the latest to face the explosiveness, falling behind 6-1 in the opening period Wednesday before becoming pin victim No. 21 in a 30-3 season by the Antelopes' three-year captain.

Highland led 23-8 entering Timson's match. Seven bouts Bouts is the name of

and nine tiebreakers later, Antelope Valley had its first league title in 19 years - winning at the expense of one of the finest programs in the Southern Section.

Including Wednesday's tiebreaker loss, Highland is 69-1-1 in its Golden League history and has won 12 of a possible 14 league titles and four section championships.

``This team has more heart than any team I've ever been on,'' Timson said.

Plenty of that heart belongs to Timson, who has won four tournament titles this season.

Last year, he suffered a first-period ankle injury while leading 3-0 in a Masters Meet match that, had he won, would have advanced him to the state championships. He instead was pinned trying to wrestle through the injury.

Timson made the most of the experience, the way he made the most of his defeats in his first three Golden League finals.

``If I could go back, I wouldn't change anything,'' he said, ``Because that's what made me a better wrestler. I learned from all my losses and how those people beat me, and I tried to figure out new moves.''

He started his senior year with another ankle injury, dealt with it with tape and focus, and will enter postseason competition with 22 pins, seven technical falls and a major decision against three losses - two by a point and one by two points.

On Saturday, Timson leads the Antelopes into the Div. V Dual Meet finals at Kaiser High in Fontana. On Feb. 17, he opens his final bid to become the Antelopes' first state qualifier since Larry Johnson in 1995.

Coleman likes Timson's chances as much as he loves his attitude.

``It's all go and no show with him,'' Coleman said. ``There's no factor in there where he wants to hurt or embarrass embarrass /em·bar·rass/ (em-bar´as) to impede the function of; to obstruct.

or anything like that. It's all about wrestling and the sport of wrestling.''
