`ABNER' MUSICAL TO PREVIEW PALMDALE HIGH ARTS PROGRAM.

Byline: Bhavna Mistry Daily News Staff Writer

A musical comedy based on a classic comic strip comic strip, combination of cartoon with a story line, laid out in a series of pictorial panels across a page and concerning a continuous character or set of characters, whose thoughts and dialogues are indicated by means of "balloons" containing written speech.  will provide a preview of what could result from the creation next year of a visual and performing arts academy at Palmdale High School div style="float:right; margin: 0 0 1em 2em; width: 20em; text-align: right; font-size: 0.86em; font-family: lucida grande, sans-serif; line-height: normal;">

``This is an introduction of what we hope to do,'' said drama teacher Chris Bice. ``This is the first musical presented by high school students in the valley since the early '60s. We wanted something for families, something that everyone could enjoy.''

The play will start at 7 tonight at the Palmdale Playhouse, 38334 10th St. E. Tickets can be obtained in advance at Palmdale High School for $5 for students and $7.50 for adults, or at the door for $7.50 and $10.

Bice says she is using the production of ``Li'l Abner'' as an example of what the school can produce through its Visual Arts visual arts nplartes fpl plásticas

and Performing Arts Academy next year, which will emphasize drama, music, vocal and arts students all working together.

Bice came to Palmdale High last fall and reinstituted the drama program, getting it ready to become part of the academy. In the fall, students presented a poetry show, ``What the Mirror Said,'' in the school's first production at the Palmdale Playhouse.

``Li'l Abner,'' like the comic strip, takes place in the town of Dogpatch. When the government wants the town evacuated so bomb testing can begin, residents try hard to find something that will make Dogpatch important.

Junior Danny Abrego plays the title character.

``I like to make people laugh and smile,'' the 17-year-old said. ``It's fun and exciting. . . . I've always liked acting. I've wanted to do it since I was little. I have a big dream, that I want to be bigger than Jim Carrey “James Carrey” redirects here. For the murder conspirator, see James Carey.

Daisy will be played by Elaine Raposas, 14, a freshman and straight-A student who has been acting since she was 6, doing community plays and most recently playing a lead role in Desert Opera Theater's ``South Pacific.''

``I've liked to perform all my life,'' said Raposas. ``My biggest dream is to be on Broadway and play `Miss Saigon Miss Saigon is a musical by Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil, with lyrics by Boublil and Richard Maltby, Jr.. It premiered at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, in London on September 20, 1989, closing after 4,264 performances on October 30 1999. .' ''

She finds her character very different from herself.
