`A BUG'S LIFE' HAS STRONG LEGS AT BOX OFFICE.

Byline: Dave McNary Daily News Staff Writer

Moviegoers continued to swarm the nation's multiplexes to see ``A Bug's Life'' as the computer-animated comedy dominated the U.S. box office with an estimated $17.4 million at 2,701 theaters during the Friday-Sunday period, studio sources said Sunday.

The results gave the Disney project, co-produced by Pixar Animation, a total of $69 million after 12 days in nationwide release. The Friday-Sunday take for ``A Bug's Life'' declined 47 percent from the previous Friday-Sunday, in line with forecasts as overall moviegoing followed its traditional pattern of sliding sharply during the first weekend of December following Thanksgiving Thanksgiving

Disney marketing executive Chuck Viane noted that the weekend-to-weekend decline for ``A Bug's Life'' was the smallest of holdover hold·o·ver

Viane pointed out that one-third of the audience for ``A Bug's Life'' has been between 2 and 11 years old and another third between 12 and 25.

`` `Psycho' is getting tons of press and the market is deluged with family films right now,'' said Robert Bucksbaum, president of the Reel Source forecasting service. He projected ``Psycho'' could gross as much as $50 million domestically, which would make the $20 million movie highly profitable for its beleaguered be·lea·guer

Three holdovers also performed solidly, led by Disney's third weekend of ``Enemy of the State'' with $9.5 million at 2,458 sites as the Will Smith vehicle neared $63 million after 17 days. Paramount's third weekend of ``The Rugrats Movie'' followed with $8 million at 2,832 theaters to nearly hit $68 million and Disney's fifth weekend of ``The Waterboy'' continued to draw decently with $6.6 million at 2,778 locations.

``The Waterboy'' now has $130.8 million after 31 days and is the 89th film to take in more than $130 million at the domestic box office.
