 at just 16 months, Evans has survived the past year thanks only to lengthy dialysis treatments that mechanically filter wastes from his blood. When Smith, 42, learned that doctors hadn't found a suitable kidney donor from among his relatives, "I instantly knew that this was something I could do," she says, "that there was no pain I could suffer that would be as great as what Michael was going through."

Blood tests proved the pair were a good match, and doctors immediately scheduled a transplant for early January. "In this world you need to realize that there's a bond," Smith says simply, explaining her gift. "There's a connection between you and everybody else you see."
