Business Editors

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 27, 2001

Chuck DeVore Charles S. DeVore (born May 20, 1962) is a U.S. politician, currently serving as a Republican member of the California State Assembly, representing the 70th District, which includes portions of Orange County. , co-author of "China Attacks," a novel about a mainland Chinese attack on Taiwan, has been receiving unusual e-mail from China: "I wouldn't say it's threatening -- but I do believe we've struck a nerve."

Today's e-mail even included a virus attack from China (it failed).

The techno-thriller author said he's been receiving hate mail from China and Hong Kong Hong Kong (hŏng kŏng), Mandarin Xianggang, special administrative region of China, formerly a British crown colony (2005 est. pop. 6,899,000), land area 422 sq mi (1,092 sq km), adjacent to Guangdong prov.  since shortly after his book began selling in Asia. "The most interesting exchange I had was with a Beijing-based intellectual," DeVore said, "He used a forceful nationalistic argument advocating military means to unify Taiwan with China.

"He even compared the situation today between Taiwan and China to that of America's own Civil War. I reminded him that the North fought to end slavery while the People's Republic People's Republic

of China would be attacking Taiwan to abolish freedom and democracy. He ceased the discussion at that point."

As for the hate mail, "I usually respond, `Long live freedom and democracy in Taiwan.' That usually gets them to stop. I'd imagine the authorities in Beijing have a question or two for anyone receiving rhetoric like that from America on their e-mail!"

"China Attacks," a novel about a surprise mainland China assault on Taiwan, features sophisticated Chinese use of advanced nuclear warheads (neutron and EMP EMP
abbr.
electromagnetic pulse
bombs), non-lethal chemical and biological agents as well as low-tech innovations such as mass use of powered ultralights, combined with a coordinated propaganda assault on the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America.
