The DVD and home video release of "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas" by Universal Studios Home Video has generated $145 million in consumer sales in only six days, despite many retailers being closed on Thanksgiving Day.

Holiday shoppers picked up 8.5 million copies, making it the biggest holiday title of all time and generating record-breaking first-week sales for a live-action release second only to "Titanic Titanic (tītăn`ĭk), British liner that sank on the night of Apr. 14–15, 1912, after crashing into an iceberg in the N Atlantic S of Newfoundland. More than 1,500 lives were lost. ."

"The Grinch" also broke the all-time DVD live-action sales record for the six-day time period, with an estimated 3 million copies sold.

"For the second year in a row, `The Grinch' has stolen Thanksgiving. Last year it was the biggest-grossing film of the year, with $260 million domestic box office, and this year it's the biggest home video title of the holidays," said Craig Kornblau, president, Universal Studios Home Video.

"We have exceeded all expectations, and consumer response to `The Grinch' proves we have a perennial perennial, any plant that under natural conditions lives for several to many growing seasons, as contrasted to an annual or a biennial.
