``Picnic in the Park'' to Celebrate Minneapolis Park System.

Theodore Wirth Theodore Wirth (1863–1949) was instrumental in designing the Minneapolis system of parks. In celebration of the Historic Theodore Wirth Home and Administrative Building being listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Minneapolis Parks Legacy Society will host a community celebration and tours of the home, Saturday, June 22, from noon to 3:00 p.m., at Lyndale Farmstead Park, 3954 Bryant Ave. South.

The event will honor Theodore Wirth, who won national recognition for his public park access policies and coined the phrase, "Parks are for People," and was the city's first park superintendent. The event will also serve as the first step in establishing the Theodore Wirth Home, Interpretive in·ter·pre·tive   also in·ter·pre·ta·tive

Rybak, City Council members Dan Niziolek and Scott Benson, along with members of the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board will be on hand to present a proclamation An act that formally declares to the general public that the government has acted in a particular way. "The citizens of Minneapolis have something so unique and so beautiful in their parks," said Theodore J. Wirth. "We established the Minneapolis Legacy Society to provide each citizen - especially the children - the opportunity to understand and become better informed about the historical and natural resources of the Minneapolis Parks System. My hope is that what began with the early park builders, including my grandfather, more than one hundred years ago will continue to grow and flourish for the people of this great city for another century. Our goal is to work with the Park Board to restore the historic home and provide a place for learning about city and park history."

The "Picnic in the Park" celebration is free and open to the public. Short tours of the historic home will be given between 12:00 and 2:30 p.m. The event includes light refreshments re·fresh·ment
