For the thousands of U.S. troops that are deploying to Iraq and other areas overseas, the United Service Organizations (USO) is sending special care packages from home to boost their morale, and comfort.

Individuals and corporations are encouraged to support "Operation USO Care Package" to let the men and women of the Armed Forces know they haven't been forgotten.

The USO has selected Kintera Inc., the leading provider of software and services for nonprofits, as the technology provider for the Operation USO Care Package program. Because of heightened security, individuals can no longer send letters and packages addressed "Deliver to Any Service Member." The USO is endorsed by the Department of Defense to provide packages to our service personnel.

Using Kintera technology through the Web site at www.USOCares.org, the USO is providing individuals with an online method for sponsoring USO Care Packages and including their own personal message of support to the service member receiving it. Additionally, the USO is partnering with major corporations such as Northrop Grumman, WorldCom and others to provide their own co-branded "Cares for the Troops Campaign." This corporate program, managed through Kintera software, will allow for employees, customers, vendors, friends and family to come together as a group to sponsor thousands of USO Care Packages.

Operation USO Care Package allows individuals to touch the lives of soldiers on a one-on-one basis.

USO Care Packages contain an assortment of items the troops have specifically requested, such as prepaid worldwide calling cards, disposable cameras, toiletries and sunscreen.

Using e-mail, corporate partners announce to their employees the opportunity to participate in their company's Cares for the Troops Campaign, which supports the USO Care Package program. The online message includes a link for employees to go to a secure Web site where they can register to participate, sponsor a care package and write their personal message to a soldier.

The Web site and all services are hosted on Kintera's network. Corporate partner Web sites are co-branded with the Operation USO Care Package logo, as well as the logo from the corporate participant -- an example can be accessed at www.NGCares.com. Kintera's system tracks how much money has been raised, provides a "Spread the Word" function to encourage support from family and friends, and automatically sends a thank you note and receipt of contribution to donors.
