As part of the new program, approximately 1,700 Motorola i30 cellular phones with service provided by Nextel Partners will be distributed during welcome weekend Aug. 22-24 to each new and returning student living in the college's 10 residence halls. Students also have the option to purchase service for out-of-state calls.

The move to cellular phones in residence halls is part of a broader technology plan to create a completely wireless campus. The college is known as one of the most technologically advanced universities in the country.  Jean Boland, Morrisville State College assistant vice president for technology services, the partnership with Nextel Partners provides students with more options and benefits. The previous landline plan required students to share phones and offered only local and incoming calls.

"We believe we are the first campus in the nation to comprehensively replace all landline phones in residence halls with a wireless solution," Boland said. "Through our partnership with Nextel Partners and other efforts to arm students with the most up-to-date technology, our students are gaining a competitive edge, especially important in today's society where knowledge of the latest technology is critical."

"Demand for our differentiated product -- especially our digital walkie-talkie feature that connects users at the touch of a button -- doesn't stop with businesses," said John Chapple Field Marshal Sir John Lyon Chapple, GCB, CBE (born 27 May 1931) was Chief of the General Staff, the professional head of the British Army. "Students today are more wired than ever before and among the most savvy technology users. It only makes sense to offer them what we believe is the best technology on the market."

"Our partnership with Nextel Partners will bring the college to the next level with respect to technology," said Morrisville State College President Raymond Cross. "Cellular technology has become an increasingly important part of the way our society communicates, and in recent years, colleges have watched more and more students favor cell phones over landline phones. We are proud to work with Nextel Partners to integrate this technology into our campus culture."

To supplement their free local services, students may also choose from a number of long-distance packages available from Nextel Partners. Students who do not wish to purchase a long-distance plan may access the remaining landline phones in each residence hall equipped with local dial tone and 800-number capability for phone-card dialing.
