Verizon Foundation, the company's philanthropic arm, recognized Astin's commitment with a $30,000 grant to establish the Sean and Christine Astin Literacy Champion Scholarships, which will go to adult learners to attend Los Angeles Valley College LAVC redirects here. Astin will be honored and the scholarship will be announced at a reception at the college at 11 a.m., on October 22. The college is located at 5800 Fulton Ave., Van Nuys.

"This is why I am the National Center for Family Literacy's Verizon Literacy Champion. "Through the scholarship program at Los Angeles Valley College, adult learners will not only be able to raise the standard of living for their families, but also set a powerful example of the importance of education for their own children."

NCFL partnered with the Los Angeles Valley College to create a scholarship program called "A Literacy Roadmap," which will support 15 adult students per year for two years. Recipients will be chosen based on familial need, availability and current education level, with the ultimate goal of establishing a legacy for family education. The scholarship will fund tuition, books, registration fees, transportation and childcare, if needed.

"Through our relationship with NCFL, we have developed a unique program that recognizes and addresses the real needs of adult learners," said Dr. Tyree Wieder, president of Los Angeles Valley College. "In addition to the scholarship funding, participants will have access to special counseling to monitor their progress, a mentor program, and tutors to work with parents and children in a family setting. We are not just giving away scholarship money; we're doing everything possible to ensure success."
