``Look Who's Coming to the Crim''.


FLINT, Mich.--(BW SportsWire)--Aug. 20, 1999--

The 1999 Crim Festival of Races The Crim Festival of Races, or "The Crim" for short, is a world renowned running event held annually every August in Flint, Michigan since 1977. It draws runners from around the world from countries such as Kenya, Russia, and Ukraine.  is only a week away and more than 15,000 runners and walkers from all over the country are planning to participate in the 23rd annual Crim Festival of Races on Saturday, August 28. The Festival of Races is made up of ten events: the premiere 10-Mile Road Race, an 8K, 5K and 1 Mile Run, an 8K, 5K and 1 Mile Walk, 8K Race-Walk, 10- Mile Wheeler Competition and the popular Teddy Bear Trot for kids. The races begin in the heart of downtown Flint on South Saginaw Street starting at 7:30 a.m. with the 10-Mile Wheelers and finish with the Teddy Bear Trot at 12:30 p.m. The weekend also includes a Sports & Fitness Expo, Pasta Party, live entertainment, swing dance contest, children's rides and games, and fun for the whole family!

This year's elite athletes are from Kenya, Tanzania, Australia, Russia, the Ukraine, Canada, Israel and the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. . More than 35 international athletes will compete in the open and masters divisions. Korir and Ndereba placed 1st at the Falmouth Road Race The CIGNA Falmouth Road Race is an annual 7-mile road race on Cape Cod from Woods Hole, a village in the town of Falmouth, Massachusetts, to Falmouth Heights. The race was the idea of Tommy Leonard, an avid runner and popular bartender in Boston and Falmouth.  in Massachusetts last weekend. Brian Sheriff of Zimbabwe and Japan will be at the Crim for the first time since 1989. He has won the Crim10-Mile twice, in 1988 and 1986 and he placed 2nd in 1987 and 4th in 1989. Tetyana Pozdnyakova of the Ukraine, the 1997 and 1998 Crim Women Masters Champion, will be returning to defend her title against Jane Welzel of the United States and Marina Belyaeva of Russia, who won the Women Masters title at Falmouth. The Mens Masters Division will feature Ted Jaleta of Canada, Craig Young Craig Young (born 1957 in Wollongong, New South Wales) was a representative Australian rugby league player for the Australia national rugby league team, the New South Wales Blues and a stalwart player over 11 seasons from 1977 to 1988 with the St.  of the United States, Amit Ne-eman of Israel, Peter Koech Peter Koech (born February 18, 1958) is a former long-distance runner from Kenya who won the silver medal in 3,000 meters steeplechase at the 1988 Summer Olympics. He held the world record in this event for some time, running 8:05.39 in 1989.

The Crim Festival of Races will again host the 10-Mile Championship Race for the USATF USATF United States of America Track and Field (governing body for T&F, Race Walking & Distance Running)  Masters Indy Life Circuit. The circuit distances range from 5K (3.1 miles) to a marathon (26.2 miles). In order to be eligible for prize dollars an athlete must be (1) a member of the USA Track & Field Association prior to the competition, (2) 40 years of age or older, and (3) either a US citizen or green card holder. The Indy Life Circuit also has an age-graded event. An athlete's time is handicapped based on age, so the older the runner the better chance he or she will have of winning. It will surely be a race to the finish at the 1999 Crim.
