TRAVATAN(R) Eye Drops' - Project Focus is the nationwide multi-city urban outreach initiative launched earlier this year by Alcon Laboratories that uses free glaucoma screenings, distribution of educational materials and national advertising to encourage at-risk members of the African American community to be more conscious of their eye health.

"It's only recently that I became aware of how severe glaucoma is among African Americans in the United States," stated Judge Ephriam. "For example, I hadn't realized that African-Americans are four-to-five times more likely to develop glaucoma than the general population, and that half of all African-American adults in the United States with glaucoma don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

In this new role, Judge Ephriam was the guest speaker at the National Medical Association's Ophthalmology Awards Banquet honoring winners of the Rabb-Venable Awards for Outstanding Research. At each annual convention, the NMA's Ophthalmology Section presents these awards to medical students and residents from around the country who have conducted outstanding scholarly work in the area of eye and vision research.

Because there is usually no pain associated with the disease, people at greatest risk won't know they have it until they get screened.
