``BASIC'' Releases Report Highlighting Bay Area Homeland Security Technologies.

The report was produced by the members of BASIC and other leaders in the Bay Area corporate research community in response to President Bush's recommendation to create a national program for technology research within the new Department of Homeland Security. "The nine-county Bay Area is a proven leader in providing the nation with the technological advantage critical to securing the homeland," Dr. Morris stated. "The region's leadership position is a result of its scientific expertise, its innovative spirit, and a research and development infrastructure that is unparalleled in the country."

Dr. Morris added, "The members of BASIC and I are keenly aware of the critical challenges the security of this country poses. With that challenge in mind, we prepared this report to describe the Bay Area's success in creating current technologies and performing advanced stage research in each of the six critical areas for homeland security identified by the Administration."

Dr. Morris, selected as the Chairman of BASIC in July of this year, is an IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  Vice President and Director of the IBM Almaden Research Center The IBM Almaden Research Center, located near San Jose, California, is one of IBM's largest research centers, specializing in both basic research in material science and applied research in computer storage, where many refinements and improvements were made in hard disc drive . As Director of IBM's second largest research center, he oversees a research lab with a population of over 500 scientists and engineers.

The Bay Area Science Infrastructure Consortium is a program of the Bay Area Economic Forum, co-sponsored by the Bay Area Council and the Association of Bay Area Governments The Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) is a regional planning agency incorporating various local governments in the San Francisco Bay Area in California. It deals with land use, housing, environmental quality, and economic development. .
