"American Idol" finalists will choose No. 1 Billboard hits from Billboard contributor Fred Bronson's book, "The Billboard Book of Number One Hits."

The finalists spent the day at Billboard's Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  office for a course in "Billboard 101," got a behind the scenes look at how the charts work, and learned that at least one of them will likely have their own No. 1 single. They had the opportunity to ask questions of the experts, as Billboard Director of Charts Geoff Mayfield, LA Bureau Chief Melinda Newman and Bronson shared their secrets.

"Our 'students' were very attentive and asked a lot of thoughtful questions about how the Billboard charts On January 4, 1936, Billboard magazine published its first music hit parade and on July 20, 1940 the first Music Popularity Chart was calculated.
