``Albert Szent-Gyorgyi Prize for Progress in Cancer Research'' Announced by the National Foundation for Cancer Research.BETHESDA, Md. -- The National Foundation for Cancer Research The National Foundation for Cancer Research was founded in 1973 as a non-profit organization under U.S. tax code 501(c)(3). Over the past 30 years, NFCR has provided more than $200 million in support of discovery-oriented basic science cancer research and cancer prevention. today announced a new science prize to honor Nobel-laureate, Dr. Albert Szent- Gyorgyi. The Albert Szent- Gyorgyi Prize for Progress in Cancer Research, a bi-annual $25,000 cash prize, will be awarded to a scientist whose research has made significant advances in the field of cancer research. The Albert Szent- Gyorgyi Prize is designed to honor outstanding scientific achievement in the war against cancer while celebrating and recognizing leading researchers making extraordinary contributions in the field of cancer research. It is also intended to promote public awareness of basic science cancer research and encourage increased investment in the resources to accelerate progress in cancer research. Named after Albert Szent-Gyorgyi Noun 1. Albert Szent-Gyorgyi - United States biochemist (born in Hungary) who was the first to isolate vitamin C (1893-1986) Albert von Szent-Gyorgyi, Szent-Gyorgyi , M.D., Ph.D. - recipient of the 1937 Nobel Prize Nobel Prize, award given for outstanding achievement in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, peace, or literature. The awards were established by the will of Alfred Nobel, who left a fund to provide annual prizes in the five areas listed above. for Physiology physiology (fĭzēŏl`əjē), study of the normal functioning of animals and plants during life and of the activities by which life is maintained and transmitted. It is based fundamentally on the activities of protoplasm. and Medicine for his study on Vitamin C vitamin C or ascorbic acid Water-soluble organic compound important in animal metabolism. Most animals produce it in their bodies, but humans, other primates, and guinea pigs need it in the diet to prevent scurvy. and cell respiration respiration, process by which an organism exchanges gases with its environment. The term now refers to the overall process by which oxygen is abstracted from air and is transported to the cells for the oxidation of organic molecules while carbon dioxide (CO - this award embraces and extends his vision of pursuing a cure for cancer by encouraging scientific innovation and fostering collaboration. Dr. Szent-Gyorgyi along with Franklin C. Salisbury, co-founded the National Foundation for Cancer Research to provide scientists the financial support necessary to pursue novel cancer research ideas. Their effort and vision has now led to directing more than $210 million in support of basic science cancer research and prevention education from the general public. "The investment in cancer research over the last 30 years has already paid off for millions of cancer survivors Cancer survivors are those individuals with cancer of any type, current or past, who are still living. The National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS) pioneered the definition of survivor as from the time of diagnosis and for the balance of life, a person diagnosed with worldwide as we continue to proceed in our abilities to fight cancer. But the toll on human life is still too great," said Dr. Daniel Von Hoff, chairman of the Szent-Gyorgyi Prize Committee. "With an aging population in America, the time is now to raise awareness and expand our support of basic science cancer research, where discoveries are being made that will impact patients." Nominations for the Szent-Gyorgyi Prize may be submitted by any scientist, business executive or member of the academic community familiar with the nominee nominee n. 1) a person or entity who is requested or named to act for another, such as an agent or trustee. 2) a potential successor to another's rights under a contract. and/or the work they are nominating. Recipients will have made discoveries resulting in, or leading toward, notable contributions to cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
