SARASOTA, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 5, 2003

Seven of the Genmar boat companies that market saltwater fishing boats, along with Bombardier's Evinrude engines, have teamed together and are introducing the Backwater Fishing School which will hold its premiere class in May.

The four-night, three-day school will be held at Tarpon tarpon (tär`pŏn), common name for members of the family Elopidae, large herringlike game fish of the warm seas of the Western Hemisphere, ranging occasionally from Long Island to Brazil and to the west coast of Africa and entering freshwater  Lodge on Pine Island Pine Island is the name of several places in the North America: Islands

Jacobs notes that "building angling skills and learning methods of protecting our ocean's resources are the primary themes behind the Genmar/Evinrude Backwater Fishing School." The school, he adds, "offers an in-depth curriculum on all aspects of backwater, inshore in·shore

The curriculum is designed to introduce newcomers or enhance current skills and the sessions are taught by both male and female fishing instructors, as well as licensed charter boat captains and guides--most of whom make their living fishing for and catching the many species inhabiting the local waters.

Basic through advanced fly fishing and light-tackle sportfishing skills are part of the program, as is instruction in basic boat operation, maintenance and trip preparation, and boating safety, along with accident prevention.

Other subjects include bait rigging, live bait and artificial techniques, fish habits vs. angler habits, electronics, cast netting, knots, trailering, light tackle use, fly casting techniques, environmental and conservation programs. There are three very full days of 'hands-on' instruction.

"The Backwater Fishing School provides its clients with the necessary techniques to finding fish and how to catch them, as well as the most effective ways of using fishing equipment and tackle--whether deep water or using a fly rod for shallow water species," Jacobs says.

Students will stay at the recently expanded historic Tarpon Lodge Sportsman Inn, which boasts a 4-Star restaurant.

The introductory price for the four night, three-day, course is $1,595, which includes everything except air and ground transportation to and from the Lodge.

The schedule of courses for 2003 is May 11-15; June 8-12; Sept. 7-11; Oct. 5-9; Oct. 12-16; Nov. 9-13; and Nov. 16-20. In 2004, March 7-11, March 14-18 and April 4-8 have been scheduled. The school website is: Genmarfishingschool.com.
