National Football League phenoms Brett Favre, Jerry Rice, Warren Sapp and Junior Seau, as well as Billy Crystal, Ray Romano and Scott Wolf head a list of superstars who will participate in the NFL Celebrity Golf Shootout on Friday, May 12, 2000, at La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif. The event, which will benefit Comic Relief and NFL charities, will be televised by FOX on Saturday, Aug. 26.

The NFL will donate $350,000 to Comic Relief from the shootout. A portion of the money also will be designated to the participating NFL players' favorite charities.

Rounding out the star-studded field will be former and current NFL greats including Marcus Allen (former Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders), Jamal Anderson (Atlanta Falcons), Tim Brown (Oakland Raiders), Brad Johnson (Washington Redskins), Deacon Jones (NFL Hall of Famer), Shannon Sharpe (Baltimore Ravens) and Michael Strahan (New York Giants), as well as television personalities Eric Close (Now and Again), Richard Kind (Spin City, Mad About You), Tom Arnold and singer Meat Loaf.

The shootout will feature four teams competing in various golf skills competitions including longest drive, closest to the pin, two-minute drill, closest to the cup, obstacle shot and Hail Mary putting played over four holes at La Costa (10, 11, 17 and 18) in Carlsbad, Calif. Each team will be composed of two NFL players and two celebrities. Each competition is worth a maximum of six points, with at least one point awarded to each team. The winner of the NFL Celebrity Golf Shootout will be the team with the most points at the end of the competitions.

Comic Relief, Inc., a non-profit organization, was created in 1986 by writer-producer Bob Zmuda to raise funds for and awareness of, America's growing homeless population. The designated recipient of monies generated from Comic Relief fundraising activities is the National Health Care for the Homeless Program, consisting of 25 projects in 23 major cities across America.
