Seventeen years later, Mike Fyhrie, who was born in Long Beach, got another chance to step onto Angels' home turf. But this time he was the home team's starting pitcher.

And the 29-year-old Fyhrie pitched well in his first big league start, giving up two runs and six hits in seven innings as the Angels defeated the Seattle Mariners, 8-2, Tuesday night at Edison Field.

Jeff Huson followed Glaus with an RBI single one out later to score Garret Anderson. Gary DiSarcina and Darin Erstad each added back-to-back, two-run singles to cap the Angels' six-run inning.

The win also meant the Angels (38-44) cut the Texas Rangers lead in the A.L. West to 7-1/2 games.

Pitching in front of 22,444 that included about 25 family members and friends, Fyhrie drew raves by striking out Ken Griffey Jr. with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the fifth. He struck out six and walked one while throwing 121 pitches.

The Angels tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth inning when Seattle starter Gil Meche, making his major league debut, walked Orlando Palmeiro with the bases loaded.

Fyhrie shut down Griffey Jr. (0-3), but had trouble with hot-hitting shortstop Alex Rodriguez.

Rodriguez had an RBI double and hit his third solo homer of the series off Fyhrie.

The Angels, who had limited success against Meche, the pride of the Mariners' farm system, got a run in the bottom of the third when Erstad's sacrifice fly scored Matt Walbeck. Walbeck doubled down the left field line to open the third.

The Angel offense, which was limited to three hits by Jeff Fassero and Paul Abbott (one inning) on Monday, was again punchless until breaking through in the eighth inning off Rodriguez (2-3).
