[0] RETRIBUTION IS SWEET FOR SPARKS : SPARKS 78, NEW YORK 76.

Byline: Gary Washburn Daily News Staff Writer

For a team due a break, good fortune could not have come at a more perfect time for the Sparks.

After 39 minutes, 59.6 seconds of battling for its playoff survival, Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  got the reprieve it was looking for Looking for

Linda Burgess, who got tangled with Lobo going for a loose ball, hit both free throws with 0.4 left and L.A. walked away with a 78-76 win in front an announced crowd of 14,547 at the Forum.

L.A. (13-13) is one game behind Phoenix (14-12) with two to play and needs to beat Sacramento on Friday to make Sunday's finale against the Mercury for the conference title.

silence after official Bob Trammell made the call.

Later, she pondered whether it was the proper call for women's pro basketball.

``It's not what I expected to see in this league,'' Darsch said. ``It seemed to be a sloppy play, a broken play.''

But it was one that saved a tiring Sparks team from overtime, which likely would have meant doom.

Four of the Sparks' 13 losses have been decided in the final minute.

``I won't say it was vindication VINDICATION, civil law. The claim made to property by the owner of it. 1 Bell's Com. 281, 5th ed. See Revendication. ,'' Rousseau said. ``I'll just say the officials were in the right place at the right time. I saw a foul.''

The Sparks toyed with putting away the Liberty but watched a blazing Sophia Witherspoon (27 points) lead a charge to tie the game at 75 with 7.2 seconds left.

The Sparks didn't convert a field goal in the final 2:53 and Lisa Leslie's shot in the final seconds was forced. However, Burgess bailed the team out with her hustle on the court and poise at the line.

``I can't recall ever being in a situation like that,'' said Burgess, who scored six points on 2 for 8 shooting. ``It was a foul though and we pulled out a close game.''

Leslie, who scored 26 points and 15 rebounds in Monday's win over Phoenix, scored just 13 after being bottled up by Lobo and Kym Hampton.

However, three other Sparks scored in double figures and Leslie's lack of production was hardly noticed. Team balanced overshadowed it.

``We're proving that any player can lead this team in scoring and rebounding,'' said guard Tamecka Dixon, who added 12 including a key steal and score with 2:53 left. ``Lisa doesn't need to have her typical Lisa Leslie game all the time because we have other people capable of stepping up.''

And winning five straight to end the season - a streak needed to make the playoffs - seemed highly unlikely just last week. The Sparks are two wins from making that happen and must avoid a letdown letdown

Thoughts of their previous inconsistency have disappeared. Replacing it is a renewed confidence that the Sparks can win out.

``I'm not even looking at the newspapers or worried about any other team,'' Dixon said. ``I'm worried about us. I think everybody in the league is watching what we do, and they're getting scared.''
