Business Editors/Technology Writers

WEST YORKSHIRE West Yorkshire, former metropolitan county, N central England. Created in the 1974 local government reorganization, the county largely embraced the Leeds conurbation and comprised five metropolitan districts: Calderdale, Bradford, Leeds, Wakefield, and Kirklees. , England--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 22, 2001

Pace Micro Technology has today announced that it is developing a Multimedia Terminal Adaptor (networking, hardware) Terminal Adaptor - (TA) Equipment used to adapt Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) Basic Rate Interface (BRI) channels to existing terminal equipment standards such as EIA-232 and V.35.  (MTA (1) (Message Transfer Agent or Mail Transfer Agent) The store and forward part of a messaging system.  (VoIP) telephony. Using Pace's MTA, operators will be able to provide targeted telephony and high-speed data services.

The MTA, which will be available in the second half of 2002, is designed to enable cable operators to deploy the most cost-effective telephony and data services possible for residential and small office markets. The product will be easy to install and utilises integrated wireless technology to distribute voice and data services in the home. This removes the need for time-consuming and costly rewiring by installation engineers and will aid earlier profitability.

product or with other Pace digital cable products such as the home gateway (set-top box The cable TV box that sits on "top" of the TV "set," although it is often located several feet away in an equipment rack. The set-top box descrambles the premium channels and provides a tuner for the higher cable numbers that very old TVs did not support. ) for television services. This approach will enable cable operators to take a more flexible approach in delivering the "triple play" of voice, video and data services by only providing their customers with equipment for the services they demand. As a result operators will no longer need to `over-invest' in equipment their customers do not yet require.

Pace's development of MTA products draws on the company's experience in integrating cable modem cable modem

technology into home gateways (set-top boxes) for digital cable television services (in excess of one and a half million Pace products with integrated cable modems are already in consumer homes) and VegaStream's(1) expertise in VoIP technology. The MTA also draws on Pace's Gateway Expander platform, which when plugged into a standard home gateway acts as a wireless and `no new wires' home networking base station for distributing voice and data services around the home. "VoIP telephony will be a major revenue generator for many cable operators," said Andy Trott Pace's Divisional CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. . "However, for the business case to work customer premise equipment must be cost-effective to buy and install. We have taken on the challenge and our MTA has been designed with the specific needs of cable operators and their consumers in mind. No longer will operators have to buy one product to fit all circumstances, they can now deliver the services they want with no wasted investment."

Andy Trott continued: "This is a new market opportunity for Pace. Drawing on our vast experience in digital television, VoIP and wireless home networking, we are providing a fresh and innovative perspective to how cable operators can create enhanced returns on their voice and data capabilities. Pace's approach will dramatically reduce capital expenditure and provisioning costs."

VoIP telephony delivered through the MTA uses an integrated DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS 1.1 cable modem. The Pace MTA supports the CableLabs PacketCable(TM) standard for VoIP to provide the full range of telephony features to the end user.

As Pace develops more solutions utilising VoIP technology, the company has merged its VegaStream business developing VoIP products for business markets with Pace's Networks & Connected Devices division. The new team will use their combined knowledge and experience to target business and consumer voice and data gateway markets.
